Behavior Intervention
Behavior interventions
Maladaptive behaviors can inhibit a child from living their life to their fullest potential. We aim to reduce these behaviors and replace them with appropriate behaviors. This is a two step process consisting of a Functional Behavior Assessment and a Behavior Intervention Plan.
Function of Behavior
People engage in behaviors to fulfill a purpose, or function. They continue to engage in these behaviors when that function is fulfilled, or reinforced. Two children may engage in the behavior of physical aggression. However, they may engage in these behaviors for different reasons; meaning they fulfill different functions. One child may engage in this behavior to escape a task demand; if this behavior often results in non-fulfillment of the demand, then it is being reinforced and the behavior will continue to increase. Another child may engage in this behavior for attention. If this child receives attention every time he/she engages in this behavior, this too is being reinforced and will increase over time. These two children both engage in physical aggression, yet for different reasons. Therefore, different strategies should be used with each child to decrease this behavior and increase appropriate replacement behaviors to physical aggression.
What is a Functional Assessment
A functional behavior assessment (FBA), conducted by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), is the process in which the hypothesized function of maladaptive behavior is determined. This process is made up of direct and indirect methods, including observations by the BCBA, interviews, data collection and questionnaires. This information is analyzed by the BCBA, a report is created and a Behavior Intervention Plan may then be recommended. Please contact us to learn more about the FBA process at XYZ ABA.
Behavior Intervention Plans
A Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) is aimed at reducing maladaptive behaviors and increasing appropriate replacement behaviors. A BIP is created based on the results of a functional behavior assessment. There is always a reason that a person engages in behaviors, if it continues to occur, it is most likely being reinforced. Therefore, the goal of the BIP is to reinforce appropriate replacement behaviors that fulfill that same reason, or function, as the maladaptive behaviors.
The Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will assess your child and work closely with those who know your child best, to help determine these reasons as well as come up with appropriate replacement behaviors to increase. Once the BIP is created, the BCBA will review it with and continue to provide consultation to those who regularly see/work with the child. The BIP is a fluid document that can/will be changed over time and when/if circumstances change. BIPs can be created for both the home and community, as well as the school setting. Please contact us to lean more about BIPs.
