Autism and Covid

We are living through global pandemic.  This is not something that we anticipated or have ever dealt with before.  While there have been pandemics in our country’s history, technology is different now, allowing for a bit less isolation.  We are all handling the situation as best as we can and doing what we think is best for our family.  That is going to look different for each family.  Parents with children with autism are in a unique position.  The core deficits of autism include social, communication and behavior.  During a pandemic, with social distancing, masks and increased restrictions, we have to find unique ways to address these deficits. We are getting creative and trying to find the best ways to help your child.

Deciding whether to let someone in your home is a large contributing factor to how ABA therapy will look for your child during this pandemic.  Perhaps you are not comfortable with in person ABA therapy at this time.  If that is the case, telehealth is an available option.  While a computer is involved in the entire session, it is best to incorporate activities that allow the child to get up and move. This can include playing games, imitation or following directions.
